Auhor's Note: This is a story about two kids who are stuck inside a Dubstep. I am trying to work on symbolism in this piece.
“Mark, Mark wake up Mark.
Number eleven please.”
“What, who, where am I?”
“This is still Social Studies,
now eleven please.”
“Um…uh, 1962.”
“No Mark It was George
Washington who was our 1st president. Now please, sit up and pay
attention!”
I lay my head down in shame
and doubt. Who cares what our presidents did and when. I mean, it’s a beautiful,
spring, afternoon and I have to spend it in school. I could be listening
to music or at least chilling inside but apparently we need to learn about people
that are dead. What good is that going to give us? I couldn't care less about
our founding fathers or the Civil War. It’s great that we won the war but that
was so long ago. Anyways, where was I, oh yeah. My name is Mark; I’m in the 9th
grade and have a C average in about every class. I may not be the smartest kid
in the world but…Yeah that’s about it. I don’t play for the varsity team in
basketball, or the select team in baseball. Sports in my mind are a waste of time.
I mean I live in America, where we eat Cheetos for breakfast and bacon pizza
for dinner. In America, we don’t believe in physical activity, we believe in
Call of Duty and Diet Coke. That is how we roll and that’s how I like it.
So getting back on track, I
waited and waited until the bell rung and school was let out. I got on the bus
and sat in the back seat just like every other day. There are a lot of people
who take this bus and every seat has at least two people in it. Yet the back
seat is always open for me and me only. I take awhile to pack my things up and
get on the bus a few minutes before we leave and yet, every day that seat is
open. I don’t know if people have a problem with the seat or the fact that I
sit in it, though I don’t care. People can judge however they want to, I don’t
care what so ever. I plugged my headphones into my ears as the bus started
driving away. Flipping through the songs in my iPod I finally found the one I
was looking for. It was called Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. It was a
Dubstep and if you don’t know what that is then you haven’t lived yet. It’s a
music genre full of electronic sounds, bass, and a drop. The drop is the best
part, It’s like a whole new world. And the song I’m listening to was just that.
I set the song to repeat and listened to it the whole ride home falling into a
trance while looking out the window.
I was the last one to get off
the bus as the driver pulled up to my driveway. My house was a dark brown color
and my yard was a wreck. Dead, yellow, grass and a wire fence to keep my dog in,
stretching around my entire yard. I walked towards my house hearing my dog bark
fiercely at the yellow Twinkie rolling down my street. My front door was
rickety and the door handle was rusted up like a piece of metal which had been
sitting at the bottom of the ocean for 3 years. My door creaked as it opened up
and I stepped inside. My dog tackled me to the ground like I was one of his
chew toys and licked me till my face turned into a prune.
Picking him off my face and
onto the ground I strolled into the kitchen. I immediately got onto the phone
to call my friend Michael up. Michael was my only friend who lived a few houses
away from mine. His house looked a lot nicer unlike mine, freshly trimmed grass
and a garden blooming out front. It was beautiful. Michael on the other hand
was not. He always wore the same clothes every day and it never seemed like he
took a shower, but he was still my best (and only) friend. Him and I had the
same kind of set at mind. We both hated school, we liked Dubstep, and we had no
other friends. So as I was saying, I called up Michael and told him to me at
the Rosemary Park forest at 4:30. Rosemary Park was a great national forest
that me and him love to hang out in. There isn't anybody else there but us. It’s
quiet, peaceful, and we love climbing the trees there. I then started to pack
my bag with food and drinks so we could have a fun night tonight.
My parents never really get
home until about six so I decided I could meet Michael at the park and still be
back before curfew. I left the house and sprinted my way down to the park as
fast as I could. Huffing and puffing I saw Michael waiting for me at the gate
entrance. Silently, I crept closer and closer to the gate trying to sneak up on
Michael.
“You know I can see you
right?”
“Oh…This is Awkward.”
“Just get over here, I want
to show you something.”
I scurried over to see what
he had.
“Did you, no you got one?”
“Yeah baby, a brand new iPod with
none other than the best song in the whole world.”
“Scary Monsters and Nice
Sprites?”
“Oh yeah man.”
“Sweet then play it.”
Blasting the music through
the woods like we a couple of cool cats we walked and talked the whole way
through the forest. We climbed trees and watched the animals of the forest dart
away when they saw us coming. At around 6:30 we sat down at a picnic area and I
took out the sandwiches for us. Ham, cheese, and bacon, my favorite sandwich in
the whole world. Me and Michael chowed down on our dinner until we were as full
as a horse. Then packed up our wrappers and headed off again. It started to
become dark at around & and we also got a little tired. Michael’s music was
still blasting as if his iPod were Beats by Dr. Dre. It seemed like forever
since we first got outside. Almost as if we had been walking endlessly yet we've gone nowhere. Then all of a sudden, we didn't hear a thing. Michael’s iPod died
and the forest was absolutely silent once the music stopped. We both walked a
little bit closer to each other getting a little nervous waking through the
forest. Come to think of it I don’t think we have ever been out in the forest
this late before. My hands started to shake and my eyes were wide trying to
make out the path to get out. Each time I walked forward it seemed like the sky
got darker. I walked faster, and faster, until me and Michael were running
faster, and faster. Until Michael tripped on a weed sticking out of the ground.
Cursing and struggling to get free the weed wouldn't let loose. It was a
sharp, prickly type weed that coiled around his leg. I tried ripping the weed
from his cut up leg but it was no use. Then I remembered the knife I always
carried in my back pocket and whipped it out. Cutting each root of the weed one
by one, while Michael was screaming for help. Finally the weed broke free and
turned as brown as the dirt it was sitting on instantly. Me and Michael
sprinted as fast as we could not knowing what would happen next, until it
jumped right in front of us. Yellow Fog
as thick as the trunk of a tree casted around us. Not knowing where to go I
kept running straight. I couldn't see 5 feet in front of me. Screaming for
Michael because I couldn't see him through the dense mist. Finally I had beaten
the fog and ran out of it while seeing Michael right behind me. Catching our
breaths we stood in complete aw trying to figure out what’s going on.
Michael and I walked through the
woods as we were both cut up from hitting branches and trees while running. I
looked at my watch and saw the time was 8:15 almost past my bedtime. But who
cares about their bedtime at a time like this, when you make it out of a forest
barely alive. Suddenly I heard this strange noise. It was coming from Michael's pocket. He took out his iPod and that song was playing again. It was Scary
Monsters and Nice Sprites. We both looked at each other because somehow the
battery on his iPod was fully charged once again. The music was playing a soft
part during the song right after the drop of the song. I knew what was going to
come up next in the song, the second drop.
He and I looked around at
the woods and saw an owl on the top branch of a tree. Me and Michael both
looked at it and tried making noises to scare it off. Then the second drop came
in the song. It was loud and scary and creepy especially at this time of night.
We looked over at the owl again to see a shadow swoop near the owl. We tried looking
at the figure but it was a dark purple shadow. Almost as if, “Wishhhh” the bird
looking figure snatched the owl up and bit its head straight off its neck. We
watched as the bird came closer and closer towards us with the decapitated owl
at a fast speed. I then looked closer and it was a raven with an owl
inside its mouth. Blood dripped from the owl as the raven chomped on it like a sandwich.
The raven then swallowed the remainders of the owl and was at a lightning speed
pace heading straight for us next.
“Run!” I screamed as Michael
and I ran as fast as we could. The raven was fast but not as fast as me. I out
ran the raven and stopped to look for Michael but there was no sign of him. Not
even his iPod was playing anymore. Scared and nervous I ran back deeper into
the forest. Then I saw him. Michael, he was lying on the ground with a pile of blood
traced around his body. The raven was gnawing at his ear as I see Michael's tongue
and eyes ripped straight from him. The raven took one sharp glance at me and made
a huge “Kakahh,” noise and I ran crying and screaming for help.
I kept running and running as
fast as I could while I was still out of breath. My heart was pounding while my
legs were shaking. I finally stopped to catch my breath and looked at my watch.
11:30, my parents would kill me if they found out if I’m out this late. That
is, if I make it out alive right now. I walked for a while until I heard my
phone ring. I looked at who was calling and it said unknown name and number. I answered
the phone wondering who it was. “Hello, hello?” I answered, “hellllloooo?” I couldn't hear anything but a faint beeping noise. Then it started to get
louder, until it started playing a little song. A song I recognized as, Scary
Monsters and Nice Sprites. The song started to get louder, and louder. Until it
blasted out of my phone and I dropped it to the ground. It was bouncing around
on the ground like a break dancer in the streets. The part the song was at
was quiet again. Then in a few seconds it would drop, “wubwubwub!” The phone
flew into the air as the drop occurred. The noise was too loud. My ears hurt
and my heart was pumping. My ears hurt so much they started to bleed. Blood
dripped from my ears and eyes as I started to run away from the phone. The song
was too intense for me as I couldn't run away from it anymore. I slowly stopped
sprinting and was soon walking. My heart race too fast and my legs couldn't take it anymore. I kept trying to go but it was no use. My slow walk turned
into a limp, then a crawl. Soon enough I closed my eyes and could only hope
this was a terrible nightmare. The music was too powerful as I cried my bloody
face to sleep. The only problem was I wasn't asleep, I let Dubstep take its course.
That’s why the saying is “Death by Dubstep.”
